2016 Homecoming Week a success

Mar 03, 2016

With the arrival of March and the beginning of Spring just around the corner, Newman University’s Winter Homecoming is officially over.

The weeks leading up to Homecoming Week in early February were sprinkled with events sponsored by the Campus Activities Board (CAB), Heritage Month celebrations and, of course, the voting process for the Homecoming King and Queen, sponsored by Student Life.

Homecoming week ran Feb. 21-27. Student Life kicked off the festivities with cake at a celebration for John Henry Cardinal Newman, the university’s namesake, tying the week to Heritage Month. The days before Homecoming basketball also featured many events sponsored by student groups, such as Hungry Hungry Hippos for the Hungry, and the university as a whole, such as High Tea.

Lifesize Hungry Hungry Hippos took place in the Jabara Flexible Theatre.

In the middle of the week, the official 2016 Homecoming Court was announced, and the coronation took place during the half time of the men’s basketball game. Easton Julian and Megan Hemel were Homecoming King and Queen.

The Homecoming Basketball games for both the men’s and women’s teams resulted in victories over the University of Texas-Permian Basin. The Lady Jets won 61-31 and the Jets won 89-73.

At the end of Homecoming Week, CAB and Student Life sponsored a formal dance in Jabara Flexible Theatre in the De Mattias Fine Arts Center.
