Newman University Theatre presents ‘As You Like It’ Shakespearean comedy April 6-9

Mar 30, 2017

The Newman University Theatre Department presents “As You Like It” by William Shakespeare in the Jabara Flexible Theatre April 6, 7, 8 at 8 p.m and on April 9 at 2 p.m.

Actors rehearse for the upcoming play, “As You Like It.”

“As You Like It” is a pastoral comedy that follows its heroine Rosalind as she flees persecution in her uncle’s court with her cousin Celia to find safety and, eventually, love. In the forest, they encounter a variety of memorable characters, notably the melancholy traveler Jaques, who provides a sharp contrast to the other characters in the play by always observing and disputing the hardships of life in the country.

Junior Carlos Sanchez plays the character Jaques in the show.

“I think the play is pretty funny [but] you need to pay attention in order to pick up the comedy,” he said. “Rehearsals have been going really well! Everyone is off book and we’re just putting the final touches on blocking and the set. Bumps on the road? We have four weeks to get this show done.”

The Newman University Theatre Department has a tradition of doing a Shakepseare play every year in the spring.

Adult tickets are $10 each, seniors and Newman University faculty and staff are $8, students are $5 and Newman University students are free with ID.

“All the worlds a stage, and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances” – Jaques to Duke Senior, “As You Like It.” Act II Scene VII.
