Newman University’s Steckline Gallery will present “Silent Conversation” by ceramic sculptor Michaela Valli Groeblacher. The exhibit, which begins with a Final Friday reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 28, will be on display through Nov. 18. Both the reception and admission to the gallery are free and open to the public.

The Gerber Institute for Catholic Studies presents the Speakers Series on “Land” Part 1 by Bill Morton, Nov. 2, 2011. A Colombian priest from El Paso, Texas, Fr. Newman Jets to take part in Kansas 150 Festival Oct. 8
Members of the Newman University Women’s Basketball Team and Cheer/Dance squad will participate in the parade set for 11 a.m., Oct. 8 in downtown Wichita to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Kansas statehood. The parade kicks off the “Kansas 150 Festival,” an event created by volunteers, municipalities, businesses and other organizations across the state to commemorate the Kansas sesquicentennial.
University to celebrate Newman feast day Oct. 9
Newman University will celebrate the first feast day of Blessed John Henry Newman with a Mass at noon* and 7 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 9 in St. John’s Chapel. The feast day was announced by Pope Benedict XVI during the Beatification Ceremony of Newman held in England last September. Breaking from traditional practice, the Pope proclaimed the feast day not as the day of Newman’s death, but as the day Newman converted to Catholicism in 1845.

This year’s first ‘Mission Talks’ set for Oct. 11-12
Oct. 11-12 marks the start of this year’s “Mission Talks” at Newman. The first talks will take place from noon to 12:50 p.m. both days in the Tarcisia Roths, ASC Alumni Center. Join Director of Archives Charlotte Rohrbach, ASC and other presenters in the 2011 Summer Symposium, who will speak on the relationship between Newman University’s mission and Ex Corde Ecclesiae, as well as how Newman communicates Gospel values, provides service to the poor, initiates social justice principles, and encourages ecumenical and interreligious activities.
Several hundred volunteers packaged meals at the SWIPE Numana food packaging event
The SWIPE Numana food packaging event that took place Saturday, Oct. 1 had a great turnout of volunteers. Several hundred volunteers packaged more than 32,000 meals at the event. The meals will go to famine victims in the horn of Africa. Watch highlights from the event on Newman’s YouTube channel.
Mark your calendars for ‘Telling Amy’s Story’ and help stop domestic violence
Verizon Wireless, StepStone, and the Newman University Department of Social Work are bringing to the Newman University campus the documentary “Telling Amy’s Story” at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, in the Performance Hall of the De Mattias Fine Arts Center. The documentary is a story about a Pennsylvania woman who, after years of domestic violence and abuse, was killed by her husband while her young children were nearby. Participants will also see the perspective of law enforcement officials who worked the case and of friends and family who were unaware of the seriousness of the situation. A panel discussion with local experts will follow the screening. This event is part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Read More…
Greek, Roman historian to lecture tonight at Newman University
Illinois State University Assistant Professor of History Georgia Tsouvala, Ph.D. will visit Newman University to lecture on her most recent publication, Before Title IX: Women Athletes in Ancient Greece and Rome. The lecture, which kicks off Newman’s annual History Speaker Series, will take place tonight at 7 p.m. in the Dugan-Gorges Conference Center on the Newman University campus. The program is free and open to the public.
