Newman University student Matthew Riedl is the 2013 recipient of the prestigious St. Catherine Medal, which is awarded annually to a sophomore or junior who has demonstrated outstanding service to the university, and has established an excellent record for scholastic achievement. Illness and a record-breaking snowstorm may have disrupted some events, but they didn’t stop the Newman University community from celebrating some traditional activities, honoring several illustrious alumni, and maintaining the spirit of Cardinal Newman Week, the annual tribute to the life and teachings of John Henry Cardinal Newman, the 19th century Catholic theologian and educator for whom the university is named.
The Newman University Fall 2012 Commencement ceremony was held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012 at Central Community Church, 6100 W. Maple. A total of 178 candidates for degrees were honored in the ceremony, including 37 candidates for associate’s degrees, 99 candidates for bachelor’s degrees, and 42 candidates for master’s degrees.
Sarah E. Cundiff has been named Director of Alumni Relations at Newman University. Cundiff began employment at Newman Nov. 21.
Following Mass of the Holy Spirit and Matriculation Service held Thursday, Sept. 1, in St. John’s Chapel, the Most Rev. Michael O. Jackels, Bishop of the Diocese of Wichita, invited those at Mass to join him on the newly remodeled Grotto west of Sacred Heart Hall for a dedication and blessing ceremony.
