The Newman University School of Social Work has partnered with The Aging & Wellness Coalition of Sedgwick County to host the second summer session of “Senior University.” The event, scheduled for June 11-13, was created for adults 55 and older who are active, engaged and interested in expanding their knowledge on a variety of subjects.

The registration cost is $65 for participants. Group discounts are available on a limited basis for the three days of classes, which includes lunch each day and a closing reception the afternoon of June 13.

The event follows the successful implementation of the first Summer University in June 2012. That event drew 45 participants, many of which are already looking to return this year.

“This program offered some wonderful classes last year and we were able to get some great speakers,” said Newman Associate Professor of Social Work and co-chair of the event Sue Gardner, Ph.D. “This year we have another exciting schedule and we expect to receive up to 100 students, which is where we must cap the registration numbers.”

Senior University follows nationwide models such as the events offered at the University of Kansas and the University of San Diego. The three-day workshop is the only one of its kind in the Wichita area, and will offer class options that are a mix of social, educational and cultural learning. This year’s classes will include topics such as Oil Fracking, Origami, Egyptology and Zumba. Senior University will also offer animal programs from the Great Plains Nature Center, Tanganyika Wildlife Park, and the Sedgwick County Zoo, as well as wine tasting and book presentations.

Classes will be taught by doctoral and master level presenters from the area’s local universities, and local experts in their fields. These instructors include Newman University Provost, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Professor of English Michael Austin, Ph.D.; Assistant Professor of Social Work Gloria Hegge, Ph.D.; Assistant Professor of English Susan Crane-Laracuente, Ph.D., and Associate Professor of Nursing Amy Siple, M.N. For complete information on classes and instructors, visit www.cpaaa.org.

For more information and to obtain registration forms call Sue at 316-942-4291, ext. 2183, or visit www.cpaaa.org. Registration is open now through June 5.

Senior University is sponsored by Presbyterian Manors, The Regent, Right at Home, Active Aging, Newman University, CPAAA, Sedgwick County Aging & Wellness Coalition, Home Instead, and Health and Wellness Coalition of Wichita.

Newman University recognized 24 candidates for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree at the annual Nurses’ Pinning ceremony held May 10 on the Newman campus.

Amy Trombley of Wichita, center, received the Newman University Spring 2013 Distinguished BSN Graduate Award. The award is given to a graduating nursing student who has a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA and demonstrates an exceptional commitment to the nursing profession and community involvement. With Trombley is Newman President Noreen M. Carrocci, Ph.D., left, and Associate Dean of Nursing and Allied Health Bernadette Fetterolf, Ph.D.

The event is a tradition in the nursing discipline that dates back approximately 130 years in the United States. At Newman, the director of the School of Nursing and Allied Health places nursing pins on graduate candidates’ lapels as a symbol of their completion of the baccalaureate of science in nursing (BSN) program. The Newman pin is unique to the university, and was designed by the first graduating BSN class at what was then Kansas Newman College.

The ceremony included a brief address by Director of the Newman School of Nursing and Allied Health Bernadette Fetterolf, Ph.D. She charged the nursing graduates to take a leading role in the inevitable changes healthcare professionals will encounter in the coming years.

“Healthcare of the future will experience a state of constant change and movement creating an atmosphere that feels uncertain and often chaotic,” Fetterolf said. “While the order and consistency brought about by good managers will still be needed, the influence of leaders concerned with vision, change and movement will be essential to the successful transformation of healthcare.”

Fetterolf added that the direction needed to effectively lead and adapt to these changes come from each individual.

“This sense of direction is based on who you are as a human being – your beliefs and values,” she said. “This directional focus, centered on the human dignity of all patients, will help ensure the right direction for the type of healthcare change that balances both business and caring.”

Kayleena Notario, center, an RN in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Wesley Medical Center, was named Preceptor of the Year by the Newman University nursing program. Each spring, the nursing program selects an outstanding preceptor – a registered nurse who has made a significant impact on and contribution to the clinical education of Newman nursing students – for the award. With Notario is Newman President Noreen M. Carrocci, Ph.D., left, and Associate Dean of Nursing and Allied Health Bernadette Fetterolf, Ph.D.

This year, the program selected Kayleena Notario, an RN in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Wesley Medical Center. Notario was cited for helping students achieve a sense of independence and confidence, providing information to students on policies and procedures, current research and other materials to broaden students’ knowledge and understanding, and modeling excellent care to patients.

The ceremony concluded with the naming of the Distinguished BSN Graduate Award. The award is given to a graduating nursing student who has a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average and demonstrates an exceptional commitment to the nursing profession and involvement in the Newman and greater Wichita communities.

Newman University honored 20 Native American students from seven high schools in the Wichita area at a recent banquet for their participation in a program designed to keep them in school and consider a career in the sciences.

The semester-long program, called the Newman Native American Scholar Program (NNASP), is designed to encourage Native American students to stay in high school and to pursue higher education by making learning a fun and rewarding experience. The program is offered primarily to Wichita and Sedgwick County Native American high school sophomores, juniors and seniors, and is designed to strengthen students’ pre-college science, mathematics and English skills.

Participants in the 2013 Newman University Native American Scholar Program included, l-r: front row: Gabriella Tennant; Stephanie Fausel; Kylee Williamson; Hazel Jay-Nesahkluah; Jeremy Shapel; middle row: Stacey Bolder; Tyler Scholl; Kathryn Postoak; Jalen Cooper; Austin Suominen; back row: Ramonyka Smith; Angelina Banks; Kayla Haase; Sidney Bray; Cordell Whitetree, Cirilo Stumblingbear. Not pictured: Adalyn McCarty; Shelly Montgomery; Michael Riddle, Corina Tuggle.

“The dropout rate for Native Americans is the highest compared to any other racial or ethnic group,” said Newman Professor of Biology and NNASP Director Surendra Singh, Ph.D. “This program is designed to plant dreams of higher education and ultimately a successful career for participants by showing them the need and opportunities for Native Americans in science and health professions.”

During the semester, each student selected an individualized project in the biological, health or physical sciences, then conducted a literature search, performed laboratory and field experiments, collected data, analyzed results, drew conclusions and wrote a paper in a scientific format. Students were also encouraged to present their papers at the annual Kansas Junior Academy of Science meeting. The class met for two hours each week and included instruction and supervision by Singh as well as other members of the Newman faculty and guest lecturers.

Newman University waived the $1,426 tuition, and program recipients received a $100 academic stipend and an identification card giving them library privileges and free admittance to Newman extra-curricular events. Students also received two hours of college credit. The NNASP is sponsored by Newman and supported by a grant from the Wichita Public Schools.

For more information about the program, contact Singh at 316-942-4291, ext. 2117 or Toll-Free 877-NEWMANU (639-6268), ext. 2117 or singhs@newmanu.edu.

The program will include works by Beethoven, Berlin, and Strauss. The audience will also have the pleasure of hearing fascinating works by some lesser know composers of by gone eras, and one work that is quite new, “Kellogg Flyover” by Dr. Guy Vollen. This semester we had the pleasure of rehearsing with Dr. Vollen. This was a wonderful opportunity for students to gain insight into the composer’s process and we look forward to sharing the fruit of that experience, and many other enjoyable works with the Newman community on Sunday.

In the event of rain, the concert will be held in the De Mattias Performance Hall. For more information email baxterd@newmanu.edu or call 316-942-4291, ext. 2651.

Newman University has named Jennifer Gantz its next vice president for Finance and Administration. Gantz will replace Mark Dresselhaus who, after 21 years of service to Newman, is retiring at the end of May. Gantz will begin her role with Newman University June 1.

Gantz currently serves as chief financial officer for The Independent School in Wichita and has held that role since 2007. While at The Independent School she has been responsible for all financial activity for the 501c3 private school, which is comprised of approximately 515 students and 100 faculty and staff members. Her background includes oversight of such functions as facilities, food service, human resources and security. In addition, she currently serves on the Wichita YWCA Board of Directors and Finance Committee.

“We’re delighted that Jennifer will be joining the Newman University community,” said Noreen M. Carrocci, Ph.D., Newman University president. “I am confident her background and experience have prepared her well for this extension into private higher education.”

Gantz has also worked at Grant Thornton, LLP and PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP as an experienced senior auditor and senior associate, respectively. She completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Management Economics in 2002 from the University of California Santa Cruz, and her Masters of Science degree in Accountancy in 2003 from San Jose State University in California.

Gantz and husband Brandon reside in Wichita with daughters Peyton, age five, and Chloe, four, and son Gavin, two.
