The men's basketball team defeated University of Texas Permian Basin at the 2016 Winter Homecoming Game.

Newman University basketball hit the road Wednesday, March 2, and headed to Tulsa, to compete in the 2016 Heartland Conference Tournament.

The men’s basketball team, 16-12 on the season and 9-11 in conference, took on No. 2 seed Lubbock Christian University and won 81-79.

In the two season games against LCU, the Jets lost 66-73 and won 84-76.

The Jets are second in the conference for three-point field goal average, knocking down 9.4 points from behind the arc each game. The team is also leading the conference in three-point field goal defense.

The women’s team, 12-15 overall and 6-13 in conference play, went into the tournament second in the conference in rebounding defense and free throw percentage. The team took on No. 2 seed University of Arkansas–Fort Smith Thursday, March 3, and lost 61-52, ending the Lady Jets post season run.

The tournament, which was expanded this year to include eight teams instead of the mere four it included before, is held on neutral ground at the Union Multipurpose Activities Center in Tulsa.

The men’s and women’s basketball teams both went into the tournament as the seventh seed.
