Newman Students and fans ‘Blue-out Fugate’ to raise money for Haiti

Jan 28, 2010

The Newman University community responds to the devastating earthquake and aftermath in Haiti with a number of charitable projects and events.

‘Blue-out Fugate’ to help Haiti

NU Jets’ fans will be wearing blue to “Blue-out Fugate” as the women’s and men’s basketball teams play the Incarnate Word Cardinals this Saturday, Jan. 30. The women’s game begins at 2 p.m., and the men’s game at 4:30 p.m., both in Fugate Gymnasium. Admission to both games will be free for anyone wearing a blue shirt and donating two or more canned food items. Before and during the games, students will offer free face-painting and sell “Superfan” shirts for $10, with all proceeds going to the International Red Cross for its work in Haiti. Prizes will also be awarded at half-time of each game – one for a musical chairs contest, and one based on a drawing from tickets participants receive for each can of food they donate at the games. Prizes include an iPod Touch and a flat screen TV. Click here to read more about how to win the prizes.

‘Help 4 Haiti Charity Week’

This week Newman students are organizing “Help 4 Haiti Week” to bring food and water to survivors of the earthquake, and to help support relief efforts in Haiti by the International Red Cross. The Newman community is asked to bring non-perishable food items or water to collection boxes in the Gorges Atrium by Jan. 30.

A dance with music provided by a DJ, refreshments and snacks will take place from 9 p.m. to midnight in the Dugan-Gorges Conference Center. Dress is cocktail attire or business formal.
