Newman to host Kansas’ first Settlers of Catan Tournament

Mar 26, 2015

If the NCAA brackets or Spring Intramural sports did not fill your recreational plate, the Newman Board Games Club is sponsoring a Settlers of Catan Tournament Saturday, April 18.

The event will be an official qualifier for the National Settlers of Catan Tournament. It is co-sponsored with Mayfair Games.

“This is the first tournament of its kind in the state of Kansas, and I think that’s pretty cool,” Student Life Coordinator Mic Bruner said.

According to Wikipedia, The Settlers of Catan was one of the first German-style board games to achieve popularity outside of Europe.

Players in the game represent settlers establishing colonies on the island of Catan. As they settle the island, the goal is build settlements, cities, and roads to connect them. Players score one point for each settlement they own and two for each city. Various other achievements, such as establishing the longest road and the largest army (by playing the most knight cards), grant a player additional victory points.
