After several months of gathering story ideas, photographing events and writing and proofreading, the Office of University Advancement has completed the fall 2016 issue of the Newman University Magazine — now available online.

“In previous versions, the magazine has been a newsletter in hard copy format. However, many people enjoy reading online because of the ease of access,” said Director of Editorial Services Ken Arnold. “[The online magazine] is another valuable medium we use to reach our readers.”

The magazine is released twice a year, in April and October.

Arnold said the online magazine allows for more stories, photos and videos to be included thanks to the unlimited amount of space, and each article can point readers to related stories. The order in which stories appear can differ from that of the printed magazine, but the online version allows for similar stories to be linked as a package.

“Our magazine web site is set up differently from others that I have seen, especially when it comes to the archive articles,” said Web Technology Specialist Daniel Murphy. “All the magazine issues are separated in a magazine format in a way that allows the reader to view articles from a specific issue.”

About a dozen people worked on the magazine in all — five to six wrote the stories, several took photos, two contributed to the graphics and multiple individuals helped with the process of proofreading. Arnold added that “Senior Graphic Designer Matthew Miller does the layout of the magazine. He does a great job making things look nice and finds a way to have it all fit together.”

Here are just a few of the featured stories in the fall 2016 issue:

  • Progress on the building of the Bishop Gerber Science Center and renovations to the Nursing and Allied Health Department in Eck Hall
  • A look into the Newman Archives, featuring various items from the university’s past
  • An announcement of the new Director of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving Sarah Strole
  • A profile of alumna Gerry Killeen, who started a successful New York advertising agency
  • Recent alumni reunions and gatherings
