NU students safe in Guatemala

May 28, 2010

Newman students currently traveling in Guatemala are safe following the recent eruption of Pacaya Volcano located SW of Guatemala City.

The Newman group said goodbye to their host families Thursday at the mission in La Labor, near Guatamala City, and arrived safely at their next stop, Lake Atitlán, located in the opposite direction of Pacaya Volcano. They have not been impacted by the eruption and are now preparing to meet their new host families in Xela (Quetzaltenango) where they will begin language training.

Newman’s Study and Serve in Guatemala Project provides students a six-week study abroad trip for intense study of the Spanish language, local history and culture while also performing a service project. This year they returned to Guatemala with thousands of toothbrushes for needy children.
