The spring orchestral concert “On With the Show!” will be presented at 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 9 in the Performance Hall inside the De Mattias Fine Arts Center. The concert is free and open to the public.

The orchestral group includes woodwinds, brass, strings, percussion, and piano. Twenty-two students of all majors gather together to use their musical talent to form the instrumental ensemble. The group meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays to refine pep band and concert music.

The concert will feature a wide range of Broadway show tunes from across the 20th and 21st centuries. Conductor Cindy Thompson said the pieces performed are well-known favorites: ‘“I Dreamed a Dream” from the play “Les Miserables” will be sung by Newman junior Taylor Rose, “Put on a Happy Face,” a jazz arrangement from “Bye Bye Byrdie,” “Defying Gravity” from the play “Wicked,” which will feature percussion, and music from “The Phantom of the Opera,” which will feature strings, piano, and percussion.

Sophomore Claire Setter has a piano solo, “Music of the Night,” which is also from “The Phantom of the Opera.”

There will be a medley piece called “Broadway in the 90s,” which includes the famous song “Circle of the Life” from Disney’s animated film “The Lion King.”

Thompson wishes to extend the invitation that students are welcome to join the orchestral group next fall.
