Suggest a name for Newman’s new mascot, set to arrive in September

Aug 26, 2010

The Newman community has talked much about getting a new mascot. Surveys have been conducted more than once to gain a good understanding of what that mascot might depict for the Newman University Jets. In 2009, another survey was conducted and focus groups held in order to establish a clear understanding of what the majority of NU fans (students, alumni, faculty, staff, and ASC sisters) desired in a mascot.

The Research
The 2009 survey collected feedback from 414 participants (57 percent female; 43 percent male). Of this group, 42 percent were under age 25; 17 percent were 26-35; 14 percent 36-45; and 27 percent were age 46 or older. Focus groups were also held with students, faculty, staff and ASC sisters.

Information collected cautioned the university to avoid visuals or characteristics that depict war or violence as the mascot needs to be true to Newman’s mission. In addition, feedback indicated modern visuals and characteristics rather than nostalgic ones fit better with the ASC and university history of forward thinking, overcoming obstacles, and possessing a spirit that ultimately inspires the transformation of the world.

From this research, this fall Newman University will welcome to campus a modern aviator in a present-day flight suit complete with helmet and aviator-style sunglasses to cheer on our athletes, pump up the crowd, and enthusiastically support all life and activities on Newman’s campus. The decision was also made to welcome two mascots, a male and a female, to campus. Considering Newman’s many activities, plus the numerous opportunities for community involvement, it is certain these two aviators will be kept busy jet setting all over the place!

Newman University Mascot Sketch Flight Plans
The male aviator has been assigned his flight plans and we have notification that he will arrive on campus Monday, Sept. 27, in coordination with the women’s home soccer game.  Check future editions of Up to the Minute for times and details. Our female aviator has not yet received her pilot’s license. However, we expect her to arrive sometime in 2011. Again, check in regularly for the coming details.

Help Us Find a Name
Between now and Sept. 20, we invite the Newman community and the public to help us find the right name for our Mr. Aviator. Please visit http://bit.ly/bp4cjq to submit your suggestion! A mascot committee, comprised of students, faculty, alumni and staff representation, will review all submissions and determine the top three, which will then be forwarded to the President’s Cabinet for the final choice. Everyone suggesting the winning mascot name will have their names placed in a drawing for a prize to be awarded at the Sept. 27 festivities!
