The Newman University Women’s and Men’s Basketball Teams are heading into the Heartland Conference Tournament March 2-3 with high hopes.
The women’s team, which has captured its second straight regular season conference title, will host the Women’s Heartland Conference Basketball Tournament. A pep rally for the women’s tournament game is set for 6 p.m. Friday in the Gorges Atrium.
The women’s basketball tournament will be held in Fugate Gymnasium, inside O’Shaughnessy Hall on the Newman campus. The women will be the Number 1 seed, and will take on the Number 4 seed, St. Mary’s University of San Antonio, Texas, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 2.
Newman University will hold a pep rally with free pizza and T-shirts at 6 p.m. Friday in the Gorges Atrium, inside the De Mattias Fine Arts Center on the Newman campus. Newman students and faculty/staff members may pick up free tickets to the 7:30 game at the pep rally. Free tickets for Newman students, faculty and staff will also be available while supplies last on Friday before the pep rally at the Athletics Department Office in the De Mattias Fine Arts Center.
The Newman-St. Mary’s game will be the second of two games Friday in Fugate Gymnasium. The first game, at 5 p.m., will feature the University of Texas of the Permian Basin, Odessa, Texas, against the University of Arkansas- Fort Smith.
The Lady Jets have beaten St. Mary’s at home already this year. If Newman wins Friday’s game, they will play the winner of the Texas-Permian Basin vs. Arkansas-Fort Smith game for the conference championship at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 3 in Fugate. A win at Saturday’s game would send the Jets to the NCAA Div. II tournament.
The Newman University Men’s Basketball Team is heading south to Laredo, Texas, for the Men’s Heartland Conference Tournament, having finished second in regular season conference play. The host, Texas A&M International University in Laredo, has won the regular season conference crown. The men, rated Number 2 seed going into the tournament, will play Number 3 seed St. Mary’s University at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 2.
Newman has split the season series 1-1 with the Rattlers with each team winning at home. If the men win Friday’s game, they will play the host team, Texas A&M International, or the winner of the Thursday night game between Texas-Permian Basin and Arkansas Fort-Smith. The championship game is scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday, March 3.
