Newman University plans College Women’s Conference to focus on emotional, physical health

Newman University will host a College Women’s Conference in early November in an effort to provide college-age women with information on women’s health and healthy relationships.

The conference will be held Saturday, Nov. 3 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with check-in beginning at 9:30 a.m. All activities are located in the Dugan-Gorges Conference Center inside the Newman University Dugan Library and Campus Center at 3100 McCormick in Wichita.

The event, sponsored by Campus Ministries and the Campus Activities Board (CAB), will feature keynote speakers Sarah Swafford, founder of Emotional Virtue Ministries and director of Special Projects for Catholic Identity for Benedictine College, and 1985 Newman graduate Diana Crook, M.D. of Lakepoint Family Physicians. Crook has also served on the board of A Better Choice Pregnancy Crisis Center since 2007.

“There’s a lot of information that young women need to know today about relationships and their own physical health,” said Father Michael Linnebur, Newman University chaplain. “We’re planning a day that will give college-age women a great opportunity to learn about both.”

The conference schedule is as follows:

  • 9:30 – 10 a.m. – Check-in
  • 10 a.m. – “Emotional Virtue: Reclaiming Virtue for a Drama-Free Life” (Sarah Swafford)
  • 11 a.m. – Break
  • 11:15 a.m. – “What My Daughters Need to Know, and My Mother Didn’t! Rediscovering the Beauty of Women’s Health” (Diana Crook, M.D.)
  • 12:15 p.m. – Lunch (served in the conference center)
  • 1:30 p.m. – Don’t Shoot the Messenger: My Interview with the Guys on Fashion and Relationship” (Swafford)
  • 2:30 p.m. – Panel Q & A session (Swafford and Crook)
