Newman University senior project to benefit pregnancy crisis center

Dec 20, 2012

Newman University senior Miranda Kohls of Clearwater is organizing a January event to benefit A Better Choice Pregnancy Crisis Center in Wichita. The event is part of Kohls’ senior capstone project at Newman as a recipient of an Adorers of the Blood of Christ (ASC) Community Leader Scholarship.

ASC Community Leader scholars are required to complete a capstone project each year that puts into action the leadership skills they have learned throughout their Newman coursework. The project challenges the students to seek ways to fulfill Newman’s mission of “transforming society.”

A Better Choice is a Catholic crisis pregnancy resource center that serves women of all ages and socio-economic levels struggling with the uncertainty of an unplanned pregnancy. Kohls has created the Chilin’ For Life – A Better Choice event which will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19 in the Newman University Dugan-Gorges Conference Center.

“I am hoping to help others better understand mothers in crisis pregnancy situations and to facilitate a way for them to become involved in community pro-life activities,” said Kohls.

The event will begin with a mother sharing her story and discussing how her choices impacted her life. A chili feed luncheon will follow, featuring chili donated by The Old Mill Tasty Shop and Freddy’s Frozen Custard. In the afternoon a representative from A Better Choice will speak on the agency’s mission and services. Those attending will also have the opportunity to participate in a service project for A Better Choice by making fleece baby blankets. The blankets are funded by The Knights of Columbus Clonmel/Schulte Council No. 3114.

Cost to attend Chilin’ For Life – A Better Choice is $10 for adults and $5 for students. For those donating an item from the Nonfinancial Ways of Giving examples found at the bottom of http://pregnancywichita.com/waystogive, prices are reduced to $5 for adults and admission-free for students. Reservations may be made by contacting Miranda Kohls at [email protected] or calling 316-650-8579 by Monday, Jan. 14.
