Baseball

High-scoring games were the norm for the Jets last week, but unfortunately Newman fell short in three of the four games against St. Edward’s. The Hilltoppers took the first game, 15-11, before Newman rallied from an 8-run deficit to pick up a 14-13 win in Friday’s late game. St. Edward’s took it out on Newman in both of Saturday’s games, picking up a 20-3 win in game one, before pulling off a 12-6 win in the series finale.

In an attempt to make up games lost to weather for both teams, Newman traveled to Manhattan, Kan., on Tuesday to take on the Big 12’s Kansas State Wildcats. The Jets put up seven hits on the Wildcats, but were unable to pull out the win, falling 7-1.

The Jets are back in action this weekend, hosting Incarnate Word for a three-game series with games at 5 and 7 p.m. on Friday, and concluding with a nine-inning game at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Softball

After dropping three games to St. Mary’s at NU Softball Field last weekend, the Jets rallied for a split against Southwestern Oklahoma State Tuesday evening in Wichita. Newman fought off two Bulldog rallies in the second game of the doubleheader, and picked up its first win of the season in a 13-12 decision over SWOSU.

The Jets are at home again this weekend, hosting St. Edward’s in a three-game series. Friday’s first game is slated to begin at 2 p.m. with the second game scheduled for 3:30. The series concludes Saturday with an 11 a.m. first pitch at NU Softball Field.

Women’s golf

The Newman women’s golf team posted another top five finish Tuesday, finishing fourth at the 10-team Midwestern State Invitational in Wichita Falls, Texas. Andrea Martires posted back-to-back rounds of 79 (+7) and finished in fourth place to lead the Jets.

Newman will enjoy an extended break before returning to the links on April 11 at the Tarleton State Invitational at Harbor Lakes Golf Course in Granbury, Texas.

Men’s golf

The Newman men’s golf team carded its first top-10 finish of the spring season, finishing ninth at the Midwestern State Invitational, which concluded Tuesday in Wichita Falls, Texas. Noah Smithson led the Jets with a 54-hole score of 229 (77-73-79) and finished 25th.

The Jets will return to the course next Monday, heading to Dallas for the Dallas Baptist Patriot Invitational, which will be held at The Golf Club of Dallas.
