As part of Cardinal Newman Week, the annual week-long celebration of Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman, Newman University will present Associate Professor of Theology at Alvernia University and Executive Director of the Association of Franciscan Colleges & Universities, Inc. Kevin Godfrey, Ph.D.
Godfrey will deliver the Cardinal Newman Lecture, which is entitled “John Henry Newman on the Mind’s Ability to Know God: The Knowledge-Generating Interplay of Imagination, Conscience and Prayer.” The event is presented by the Gerber Institute for Catholic Studies at Newman University.
The lecture will be held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 18, in the Dugan-Gorges Conference Center, inside the Dugan Library on the Newman University campus, 3100 McCormick. The event is free and open to the public.
Godfrey has published articles and delivered scholarly papers at national and international conferences on topics in Historical Theology and Christian Spirituality. His main areas of interest for research are the Franciscan Tradition and the theology of John Henry Cardinal Newman. He has served as convener and moderator of the Thought of John Henry Newman Group of the Catholic Theological Society of America for the past seven years.
Godfrey’s lecture will address Newman’s ideas and understanding of how the mind works to know God. It will also include reflections about teaching and learning based on Newman’s insights about knowing God.
Each year, the Newman University community celebrates the life and teachings of John Henry Cardinal Newman, the 19th century Catholic theologian and educator for whom the university is named. In addition to the Cardinal Newman Lecture, this year’s events include the traditional High Tea, and the awarding of the Cardinal Newman Medal and Alumni Awards.
The recipient of this year 2014 Cardinal Newman Medal is Margaret Knoeber, ASC, for her services and significant contribution to the development of Newman University. She will receive the medal at the Cardinal Newman Banquet and Alumni Awards Ceremony set for 6 p.m. on Feb. 22.

Sister Margaret Knoeber ’49, ASC – Cardinal Newman Medal
The Cardinal Newman Medal is the highest honor bestowed by Newman University. Sister Margaret played a major role in launching the Chemistry Department at Newman, and has served the university as alumni director. She also helped pioneer interactive television technology (ITT) in western Kansas, which brings coursework leading to several degrees from Newman to residents of western Kansas.
Janice Friess, ASC ’63 – Beata Netemeyer Alumni Award
Sister Janice taught elementary school in the Wichita area for 14 years, later became a nurse assistant and ministered at Villa Maria Home in Mulvane, Kan., then worked in pastoral care ministry at Via Christi Hospitals in Wichita for 31 years.
The Honorable Tom Malone ’76 – Leon A. McNeill Distinguished Alumni Award
Malone will be honored for his professional achievements, including his 12-year law practice in Wichita, his election the Sedgwick County District Court where he served for more than 12 years, his appointment to the Kansas Court of Appeals, and his appointment to his current position as Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals.
Sheila Maksimowicz ’77 – St. Maria De Mattias Award
Maksimowicz served multiple terms as an Alumni Association Board member and as president during the university’s 75th Anniversary year. She has been a regular participant in many Newman events and is always willing to help where needed. She has also been a consistent donor to the Annual Fund and has supported many other needs of the university.
Beverly Ann (Moritz) Greenwood ’63 – Spirit of Acuto Award
Greenwood gave tirelessly of herself as a student at Sacred Heart College from 1959 to 1963. She was among the students who traveled to the “Model United Nations” in New York City, and from this experience and her genuine care for others she brought three young women from Africa to her home in rural Milford, Kan.
