Graduates of the Newman University Occupational Therapy Assistant program achieved a 100 percent pass rate on the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy for the 2013 calendar year.
Fifteen Newman students tested and passed the certification exam, with a total scoring average of 482. The NBCOT calculates pass rates based upon the percentage of students who pass the test within one year of graduation.
“We’re very pleased with these results,” said Clint Stucky, assistant professor of occupational therapy and director of occupational therapy at Newman. “Credit goes to the students, of course, but also to our faculty and staff for all their hard work.”
Graduates of the Newman OTA program are eligible to sit for the National Certification Examination for the Occupational Therapy Assistant, administered by NBCOT. After successful completion of the exam, individuals become a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA).
Newman University is one of the few universities in the area to offer an OTA program. The two-year, associate’s degree program is designed to prepare graduates to assist occupational therapists in the delivery of treatments to help people with physical, mental, and developmental disabilities learn skills and techniques to perform everyday functions, such as bathing and dressing.
