Newman University has awarded a total of $1,522,560 in the university’s top scholarship program to 16 high school students who will begin their studies at Newman in the Fall 2014 semester.
Each student received a John Henry Cardinal Newman Scholarship, which is worth $95,160 over four years ($23,790 per year). The scholarships cover full tuition for the students over four years at Newman University, making the total amount awarded the equivalent of $1,522,560.
“Newman University is proud to award these 16 scholarships to some of the best and brightest students in the Midwest,” said Vice President for Enrollment Management Mark Barrett. “Earning a Cardinal Newman Scholarship is no easy task, and these students have shown they are true leaders both in and outside the classroom. Newman has a history of attracting very strong academically prepared students and this group of young scholars is no different.”
The Cardinal Newman Scholarship is the largest and the most competitive scholarship the university awards. To be eligible, students must have at least a 4.0 GPA and a score of 30 on the ACT or 1320 on the SAT. Recipients are required to enroll in a minimum of 12 credit hours each semester and may renew the scholarship up to eight consecutive semesters, as long as all renewal criteria are met. These students must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.4 and complete 64 community service hours annually.
To be considered for the scholarship, students also were asked to attend a “Scholarship Weekend” at the university that included meetings with faculty and other Newman officials, and an on-site essay assignment. Twenty students attended the event. Of those, the university selected 16 to receive offers.
More than 95 percent of Newman University students receive assistance in the form of merit and need-based financial aid. Newman remains committed to making a quality, student-focused education affordable for students and families in Kansas and throughout the nation. Newman University graduates have extraordinarily high placement rates into medical and other graduate and professional schools. Newman offers outstanding programs in Business, Education, Health Sciences, Communication, and other academic disciplines.
