The Newman University Steckline Gallery will present “LARGE,” curated by Matthew Hilyard, as the second show of its 2014-2015 season. The exhibit of printmaking, mixed media, installation, drawing and painting, which begins with a Final Friday reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 26, will be on display through Oct. 24. Both the reception and admission to the gallery are free and open to the public.
An “Art for Lunch” presentation by the artists will be held Tuesday, Oct. 2 from noon to 1 p.m. in the gallery. A light lunch will be served on a first-come, first-served basis. Guests can also bring their lunch. This event is also free and reservations are not required.
This is Hilyard’s second curatorial effort at the Steckline Gallery. The show features artwork from Hilyard (Andover, Kan.) and seven other artists: Valerie Haring (El Dorado, Kan.); Gensine Janzen (Bozeman, Mont.); Kevin Mullins (Wichita, Kan.); John Oehm (Wichita, Kan.); Elizabeth Rowley (Lawrence, Kan.); Genevieve Waller (Denver, Colo.), and Erin Wiersma (Manhattan, Kan.). Each artist was asked to submit work that measured 5′ by 7′.
“Considering the intimate space at the Steckline Gallery, I wanted to bring together a limited number of artists to show, then ask them to consider and accept a certain dimension,” Hilyard said. “I’m honored that each of these artists said yes. I’m always excited and motivated to create an exhibition that is unique for the community and most importantly for students.”
The Steckline Gallery is located inside the De Mattias Fine Arts Center on the Newman campus, 3100 McCormick. The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., or by appointment. For more information, call 316-942-4291, ext. 2199.
