As part of the 2014-2015 History Speaker Series at Newman, Newman University’s History Department will present Assistant Professor of Ancient Mediterranean World at Portland State University Brian Turner, Ph.D.
Turner will deliver the lecture, which is entitled “The Romans Always Win?” His lecture will address the Roman military and their war losses and casualties of war.
The event will be held at 7 p.m., March 5, in the Dugan-Gorges Conference Center, inside the Dugan Library on the Newman University campus, 3100 McCormick. The event is free and open to the public.
Turner has been an Assistant Professor of the Ancient Mediterranean World at Portland State University since 2011. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in the Department of Classics, at Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada. He completed his Ph.D. in History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
As a Roman historian, Turner focuses on ancient military history, particularly the treatment of war losses and casualties of war, as well as the history of geography, cartography and worldview in antiquity.
Turner was director of the Ancient World Mapping Center from 2009 to 2011, and is currently an Associate Editor of Pleiades, an online gazetteer of the ancient world. He has published widely and presented at venues across the country. He has also won several awards.
Published articles by Turner have reevaluated many Roman military memorials, examined the geographic and cartographic knowledge apparent in ancient texts, and considered the value of modern concepts of insurgency for the illumination of ancient conflicts.
Turner co-hosted a panel on war losses in antiquity at the 2015 annual meeting of the Society for Classical Studies. The results of that panel are now in preparation for the publication of an edited volume.
