Gerber Institute, Via Christi Health present breakfast panels on healthcare reform April 8, 15, 22

The Gerber Institute for Catholic Studies at Newman University and Via Christi Health are partnering to present three breakfast panel and participant discussions on healthcare reform. The discussions will take place on April 8 and 22 in the Tarcisia Roths, ASC Alumni Center inside the Dugan Library and Campus Center, and on April 15 in the Cardinal Newman room on the lower level of Sacred Heart Hall. Breakfast will begin at 6:45 a.m., with the panel discussion beginning at 7:15 a.m., followed by participant discussion. The events will conclude at 8:15 a.m. A hot breakfast will be provided to the first 30 registrants.

The April 8 session will focus on the questions “Whose Responsibility Is Health? Whose Responsibility Is Healthcare?” In particular, the discussion will examine the relation between individual and social responsibility regarding healthcare, and explore the advantages and disadvantages of single payer and multi-payer systems. Panelists scheduled to speak are Beverly Gossage, director of HSA Benefits Consulting, Msgr. Robert Hemberger, vicar general of the Diocese of Wichita, and Chris Fox, Ph.D., associate professor of philosophy at Newman University.

The second session, scheduled for April 15, is entitled “Perspectives on the Relationship between Healthcare and Financing.” The discussion will explore the questions “How do reimbursement practices affect models of care?” and “How would you re-envision the future?” Panelists planned for this session are Dr. Ed Hett, family practitioner, Lynnette RauvolaBouta, senior vice president, Mission Integration, Via Christi Health, and one or more panelists still to be announced.

The third session on April 22 is entitled “Healthcare and Immigration Issues,” and will explore how immigration and healthcare issues intersect and what challenges must be faced. The panelists for this session have yet to be announced.
