Newman trailed 2-0 when Esquivel suffered the wrist injury, and freshman Hans Hassell was asked to fill in. Senior Stephen Williams guarded the goal in Sunday’s match, and held his own. The former NU basketball player recorded six saves, but was beat by a controversial penalty kick that gave St. Edward’s a 1-0 overtime win.
Newman is now 2-8-2 on the season, and is fifth in the Heartland Conference with a conference record of 1-3.
Bowling
Senior All-American Derek Hartnell continued to dominate the bowling lanes as he picked up his second tournament win of the season at the Mid States Invitational last weekend at Wichita’s Northrock Lanes.
