Earlier this summer, Newman University and the Diocese of Wichita celebrated the 75th Anniversary of the ordination of Fr. Emil Kapaun. He was ordained in Newman’s St. John’s Chapel on June 8, 1940. To honor the anniversary, Newman created a video that included views of a 12-foot mural created by artist Wendy Lewis symbolizing Fr. Kapaun’s life, which hangs in the chapel.
As a way to continue celebrating the Year of Father Kapaun, which was declared by the Most Rev. Carl A. Kemme, Bishop of the Diocese of Wichita, Up To The Minute presents a second video recently shared with Newman staff.
Christopher Stefanick, a popular Catholic speaker and web personality, created a YouTube feature detailing the life and times of Fr. Kapaun. It effectively depicts the sacrifices and heroic efforts of the Kansas-born priest.
Stefanick’s clear and compelling storytelling is worth watching to learn about the army chaplain, who died in 1951 in a prisoner of war camp in North Korea. A movement has been underway for many years to have Fr. Kapaun proclaimed a saint by the Catholic Church. His cause is currently being considered by the Vatican.
