The Newman University Steckline Gallery will present “Shackleton” by Kevin Mullins as the fourth show of its 2015-2016 season. The exhibition of mixed media and screen printing, which begins with a Final Friday reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 27, will be on display through Dec. 18. Both the reception and admission to the gallery are free and open to the public.
An “Art for Lunch” presentation by the artist will be held Tuesday, Dec. 1 from noon to 1 p.m. in the gallery. A light lunch will be served on a first-come, first-served basis. Guests can also bring their lunch. This event is also free and reservations are not required.
Mullins, a painter and printmaker currently living in Wichita, Kan., earned an Associate of Applied Science degree in Foundations, Design from the Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, N.Y., in 1970. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1972, and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of North Carolina in 1985. Mullins has also studied at the Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, the Banff School of Fine Art in Banff, Canada, and the Chelsea School of Art, in London.
Mullins said his work utilizes repetition and repeated patterns to form clarity.
“My work is an attempt to illustrate transcendence,” he said. “The use of repeated patterns in my work serves the same function that a mantra does in meditation. I employ screen-printing, traditional and non-traditional paint application, to give the work the appearance of being mechanically reproduced. For me the diminished evidence of the human hand creates a visual purity. Emotion should be a response from the viewer not an element in the work’s creation.”
Mullins’ work has been exhibited at galleries and shows across the world. Mullins has won multiple awards, grants and fellowships, and his work is in the collections of individuals, museums, galleries and businesses across the nation.
