Newman University will launch an Entrepreneurship minor academic program in the Fall 2016 semester.
The new program is designed to provide a good option for those students who may later pursue a management degree, as well as those wanting to go into business on their own, said Sandra Hambrick, associate professor of informational technology and director of online curriculum and instructional support.
Hambrick said that materials prepared for approval of the new program note that the minor is a good strategic fit with the bachelor of business in management major, which requires three additional business courses as electives. The materials also describe the minor as perfect for non-business majors who want to use their talents to create their own startup business.
The new minor has been approved by the Newman Business Department and the Academic Assembly, Hambrick said. No additional new faculty resources will be required for the program.
The minor requires 18 hours, consisting of six, three-hour courses: Principles of Management; Principles of Marketing; Marketing Strategy; Entrepreneurship; Venture Capital, and Cooperative Education. The curriculum will include topics such as management theories and principles, pricing and promotion, customer satisfaction, developing a business plan, investors, and finance, as well as hands-on experience and working with mentors.
“The Co-Op/internship program, which is required for this minor, gives the student hands-on experience working side by side with an entrepreneur or small business,” said Associate Professor of Management and Entrepreneurship Ron Ryan, Ph.D., who initiated and has led the development of the new program. “This is a very timely move coordinated with the Entrepreneurship Task Force sponsored by the Wichita Chamber of Commerce, which gives us a very large network of organizations to do joint ventures, strategic alliances and provide resources committed to assuring Wichita is the city of choice for entrepreneurship. We are very happy to be part of this initiative and grateful to provide these opportunities for our students.”
Some courses have prerequisites and will require junior standing or instructor consent. Complete information on courses will be available in the Newman University 2016-17 Catalog.
