Newman University junior Dustin Reed was chosen as the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s Wrestler of the Year during the MIAA Tournament Feb. 14.
Reed, who won the 125-pound title, is on a 19-match winning streak. He is currently 25-1 on the season.
“I was shocked when I won this award. I knew I had a good season so far, but so had a lot of other kids in the MIAA,” Reed said. “It definitely made me feel honored to see that all of these coaches have noticed what I have been doing this year. I couldn’t be happier.”
The junior from Colby, Kan. has won four championship titles in four tournament appearances this season.
Reed, who has been wrestling for Newman all three years of his collegiate career, is looking to carry his success into the rest of post-season competition.
“The big thing for me, right now, is to not settle. MIAA Wrestler of the Year is an amazing award, but that’s not what I want out of the season. I want to be a regional and national champion,” Reed said. “I just need to focus on wrestling how I know how and keep battling and doing what I have been. If I keep that up, anything is possible. It’s been a long road, and I just have to keep battling.”
The Wrestling Team’s next appearance on the mat will be at the NCAA Super Regional Tournament starting Feb. 26 in Gunnision, Colo.
