Students Megan Hemel and McKenna Seiler traveled to Jamaica Feb. 8 for a medical mission trip with 23 other volunteers, including physicians, nurses, a physical therapist and those in training to join the medical field, led by Robert Martin, M.D. ’83, a Newman University alum currently practicing medicine in West Plains, Mo.
The group stayed in Cornwall and Middlesex counties, but worked mainly at one clinic in the Trelawney parish capital Falmouth located on the island’s north coast, which is notable for being one of the Caribbean’s beat-preserved Georgian towns. Aside from Falmouth, the group also visited a number of other clinics.
Seiler said that her “most memorable moments… were how grateful and appreciative everyone was and being able to work and learn from an incredible medical team.”
For the eight days the group was on the island, they were able to enjoy work and play. Seiler said, during free time, they would travel to Dunns River Falls and Luminous Lagoon, which are prominent tourist attractions.
Seiler and Hemel expressed that the trip was a great opportunity to help others, learn from experienced medical professionals and see how impactful it was and will continue to be in their lives and careers to come.
