Read the latest updates for the Newman University Jets.
Baseball
The Jets pushed their record to 12-11, and started a four-game winning streak with wins over Texas-Permian Basin and Lincoln last week. Eric Hansen was named the Heartland Conference pitcher of the week after allowing no runs and just one hit in four innings of work against defending Heartland Conference champion UTPB last weekend. The Jets continue their season this week, starting with two games against St. Edward’s on Thursday, and two more on Friday. Both games will be played at McCarthy Field on the NU campus.
Softball
Early-season struggles continued for the softball Jets, who fell to 0-8 after dropping three games to Texas A&M International, and two more to Texas A&M-Kingsville last week. The Jets will look for their first win this weekend, hosting St. Mary’s in their first home games of the 2010 season. The Jets and Rattlers will play two games Thursday, and will conclude the series with one game on Friday.
Women’s Golf
The Newman women’s golf team posted a top-five finish at the Lion Invitational, which concluded Tuesday in Pottsboro, Texas. Alyssa Balding’s back-to-back rounds of 79 (+7) led her to a sixth-place finish.
Balding’s 36-hole score of 158 (+14) was the low score for Newman. Megan Birdsey was 10 strokes behind Balding after carding back-to-back rounds of 84 (+12) to finish with a tourney score of 168 (+24). Angelo State won the event with a 36-hole score of 631.
The Jets are back in action Mar. 28 when they travel to Wichita Falls, Texas for the Midwestern State Invitational.
Tennis
Wichita State transfer Laryssa Ferreira won three more singles matches and remained undefeated in Heartland Conference play, but the Jets couldn’t pick up team wins over St. Edward’s, St. Mary’s, and Incarnate Word last weekend in Texas. Newman will look to get back on the winning track March 24 when they travel to McPherson to take on the McPherson College Bulldogs.
