Director of Mission Effectiveness Charlotte Rohrbach, ASC, is leading the traditional Mission Talk series at Newman University, with her second talk of the four-part series at noon Wednesday, Nov. 8, in the Dugan-Gorges Conference Center.
This year, Rohrbach is focusing on separate chapters of time based on the four different names the university has been known by throughout its 84-year history. The first talk in the series featured the history and happenings of Sacred Heart Junior College when it began in 1933 and kept the name until 1952.
This second talk will focus on Sacred Heart College from 1952 to 1973. Rohrbach draws three distinct conclusions and will go in-depth into each of the three decades covering that period of Sacred Heart College:
- In the 1950s, the state of Kansas gave accreditation to the college as a degree-granting institution.
- In the 1960s, a cultural revolution swept the United States and Sacred Heart College was no exception.
- In the beginning of the 1970s, the college underwent changes to the core curriculum and a major change to the grading system.
In addition, the archives department has created a display in conjunction with the Mission Talk. It will be on exhibit in the Heritage Room located inside Sacred Heart across from St. John’s Chapel.
The event is free and open to all who would like to join. Because there will be a light buffet lunch served, RSVPs must be made no later than Monday, Nov. 6.
