Newman University Director of Athletics Joanna Pryor has named Drew Maus new head baseball coach effective Aug. 5, 2019.  He replaces Zane Ehling, who moved to an administrative role within the Newman athletic department last month.

Maus has served as a college assistant coach for seven years. He served a total of five seasons during two separate stints (2010-2013 and 2015-2019) on staff at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. He also served as an assistant baseball coach at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock for two years.

“I want to thank Joanna and Zane and the university for this opportunity. I’m excited to get to work,” Maus said. “I went to a Catholic school kindergarten through graduating high school. I was born and raised Catholic just like my entire family, so the fact that Newman is a Catholic school definitely caught my eye.“

Pryor likes the baseball and coaching background Maus brings with him to the university.

“We believe we have an outstanding young coach to lead the Newman baseball program,” Pryor said. “Drew comes from a family of coaches and he has great knowledge and a wonderful love for the game that will benefit our student-athletes.”

Maus said, “Coaching is in my family. My dad is a hall of fame coach in Ohio. He won two state championships at the high school that I attended. My uncle coached at two different high schools. My cousin is the head football coach at Hamilton (Ohio) High School. My other cousin is the head baseball coach at Northwest High School and my grandpa coached forever. So I kind of always knew what I was going to do.”

Maus also played NCAA DII baseball. He was the starting shortstop for Ouachita Baptist University on its 2008 national runner-up team. From his playing and coaching experiences, he believes Newman has the potential to have consistent success on the collegiate diamond.

“Wichita is the crème de la crème in regards to talent in the region and has a great baseball tradition,” Maus said.

“I want to bring back the consistent excellence that Coach (Paul) Sanagorski had when he built the Jets program. I want people to remember Newman as a baseball school and know that we’re going to be a program that’s going to be around for a while and competing for a long time.”

Maus is a native of Hamilton, Ohio, approximately 35 miles north of Cincinnati. He and wife, Katy, have two sons, Reece, 6, and Dean, 4.
