The Newman University community is buzzing with excitement for the canonization of its namesake.
The annual fall prayer breakfast hosted by Campus Ministry will give the community an opportunity to celebrate the big event.
The prayer breakfast will be held at 8 a.m., Oct. 24 in the Dugan-Gorges Conference Center.
“This breakfast will follow a week of celebrations leading up to Cardinal Newman’s canonization on Oct. 13,” said Emily Simon, assistant director to Campus Ministry and the Honors Program.
“Not only are we the only university in the United States to be named after Newman, it’s a big deal when your namesake receives sainthood. So it will truly be a joy for the Newman community to recall both the ideas and the words of a man who did such wonderful things for higher education, the Catholic intellectual tradition and the mission of Newman University itself.”
President Noreen M. Carrocci, Ph.D., who will have just returned from attending the canonization in Italy with a delegation from the Newman community, will speak on their behalf about their pilgrimage.
Those who attend the prayer breakfast will enjoy food, prayer, music and a short video to learn more about what canonization entails.
“I’m a big fan of breakfast here at Newman, so that’s always a major selling point for me,” said Simon. “But in particular, I’m really looking forward to hearing stories and experiences from the group that made the journey to Newman’s canonization in Italy.”
University Chaplain Father Adam Grelinger said he is also looking forward to hearing stories from those who attended the canonization.
“This prayer breakfast will be a bit unique since it will focus on Newman’s canonization,” he said.
Simon added, “I think the prayer breakfast is a wonderful opportunity to bring the Newman community together — to prayerfully open our minds and hearts to each other and to God. And good food and good conversation is never something we want in short supply of here at Newman.”
