Due to health safety concerns for students, Newman University has announced an academic trip to Italy, originally scheduled to depart March 12, is postponed until later this year.

The decision to reschedule the upcoming travel was made by university officials after consultation with Adorers of the Blood of Christ (ASC) sisters in Rome and following the updated travel warnings for Italy released over the weekend by the CDC and U.S. State Department over the “widespread ongoing outbreak of respiratory illness (COVID-19) caused by a novel (new) Coronavirus.”

Newman Provost Kimberly Long, Ph.D., said, “With numerous U.S. study abroad programs canceling plans, not only due to the threat of the virus but because of the quarantine policies of both Italian and the U.S. governments for those suspected of exposure, and new travel warnings for Italy, we made the decision to postpone this learning opportunity until fall.”

Program coordinators are working with students to reschedule flights and travel plans. The updated schedule for the overseas experience is now Oct. 5-14, 2020.

The trip is in conjunction with a Newman class named, “Rome 2020: Spirit of Acuto,” which features undergraduate and graduate students staying with ASC sisters in Rome and touring the birthplace of St. Maria De Mattias and the areas of her original ministry. St. Maria is foundress of the ASC, sponsors of Newman University.
