Newman University officials recently signed an agreement with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to participate in the VA’s Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program for the award year Aug. 1, 2010 to July 31, 2011. The agreement marks the second year Newman has elected to participate in the Yellow Ribbon program.
The program, a part of the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008, honors the service of military men and women by helping veterans, active duty personnel and their family members have access to high-quality private education. Those who qualify for the program and wish to attend a degree-granting private college or university may receive a subsidy for tuition and fees equal to the tuition and fees of the most expensive public institution in Kansas. In addition, Newman pledges to meet up to 50 percent of the difference between that subsidy and Newman’s costs, with the VA matching Newman’s contributions dollar-for-dollar. The result is little or no money out-of-pocket for the student.
As a participating institution, Newman will be included in the current list of colleges and universities participating in the Yellow Ribbon Program for 2010-11 on the VA’s GI Bill Web site at http://www.gibill.va.gov. The list will include specific information on each school’s agreement with the VA.

Clayton added that as a highly respected Catholic university, students of all faiths are welcome. The university also offers many programs that will meet the needs and schedules of former and current military personnel and their families, he said.
Those interested in attending Newman under the Yellow Ribbon Program must first contact their nearest VA office and complete the 22-1990 form to determine eligibility. Once the VA certifies an individual to receive benefits under the Yellow Ribbon Program, he or she should contact the Newman University Admissions Office at 316-942-4291, ext. 2144. The Admissions Office can answer questions about the program and the amount Newman will contribute, and guide students to information about other financial aid they may qualify for from the university.
