The Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society has been helping well-deserving students who achieve great academic heights for more than 100 years.
Each year, the organization determines the top colleges providing the best transfer student services to be named on their Phi Theta Kappa Transfer Honor Roll. Newman University made the 2020 list for a third consecutive year.
Phi Theta Kappa President and CEO Lynn Tincher-Ladner, Ph.D., said, “The Transfer Honor Roll reflects the growing importance of recognizing and responding to the needs of transfer students. This award is given to four-year colleges and universities with proven outcomes for transfer success. They are the best at providing a supportive and smooth transition from a community college — equating to increased rates of bachelor’s degree attainment for transfer students.”
The society provides opportunities for students to explore career paths and learn and develop important leadership skills to help them grow professionally. It also helps students reach their higher education goals by awarding scholarships.
Newman University recognizes PTK members by awarding the Phi Theta Kappa Transfer Scholarship at the highest amount of $4,500.
Recipients must be PTK members prior to enrollment at Newman, have a cumulative 3.5 GPA, be on track to graduate with an Associate of Arts, Associate of Science or an Associate of Applied Science, be a first-time transfer student and be a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science candidate.
The scholarship, which is available for fall and spring semesters only, is renewable for up to four consecutive semesters as long as the student maintains at least a cumulative 3.0 GPA at Newman.
Newman Assistant Director of Transfer Admissions Angel Moore said, “It is important for us to let our incoming transfer students know how important they are to Newman and that we highly value their previous two-year education.”
Creating a personalized environment for prospective transfer students is something the team at Newman strives for with every student.
Associate Director of Graduate Admissions Monica Heasty said, “Our transfer admissions office seeks to provide superior customer service to all prospective transfer students. We give each of our applicants individualized attention. This helps us stand out from other institutions and makes us a top choice for a transfer student. At Newman, they are not just a number.”
She added her appreciation for her staff upon news of receiving the achievement of being placed on the honor roll.
“This award recognizes the hard work of faculty, staff and administration at Newman University. We aim to make the transfer process to Newman seamless for all our students. We are also grateful because this award gives Newman excellent exposure to community college students who are members of Phi Theta Kappa and seeking to transfer to complete their bachelor’s degree.”
