Newman joins global generosity movement

Nov 18, 2020

Giving Tuesday, a feel-good movement that started in 2012, is a day for people and organizations to give, collaborate and celebrate generosity.

It particularly fits Newman’s mission, as the Giving Tuesday website indicates the day’s purpose is to unleash “the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world.:

The Newman University Advancement Office will host a special Giving Tuesday fundraising event titled “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Newman University Edition.”

The virtual event will happen Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2020, through Facebook Live to raise money for the Newman Fund. Contestants include Newman Professors Joe McElroy, Kelly McFall, Matthew Umbarger and Athletic Director Joanna Pryor. By supporting a contestant, donors are contributing to the Newman Fund.

Director of Alumni and Campus Events Laura Hartley organized the event and is excited for the community to get involved and to raise funds for Newman University.

Approximately 95% of Newman students rely on scholarships to make their college goals a reality and these donations will help support those scholarships.

Hartley said, “Giving is important because it shows that you understand the simple but true adage, ‘it takes a village.’ Our students want to transform society and we want to teach them how to do that but we need your help to reach that goal.”

She added, “Newman strives to teach the next generation about hard work, commitment to and love for their fellow man. When you give you are contributing to that noble endeavor.”
