The Newman University Project SONRISA is again seeking donations of toothbrushes for Guatemalan children. The project has set a goal this year of collecting 11,000 toothbrushes by April 1.
Project SONRISA (which means “smile” in Spanish) is a project undertaken by Newman students who are a part of the Study and Serve in Guatemala Program. The toothbrushes will go to the children of La Labor, an impoverished community on the outskirts of Guatemala City. Members of Newman University’s founding order the Adorers of the Blood of Christ (ASC) live in La Labor and have created schools, medical and dental clinics, and community health and environmental protection programs for local people. The sisters have asked the Newman students to bring 11,000 toothbrushes to distribute to local children as a part of a dental health education campaign. Students will deliver the donated toothbrushes to Dani Brought, ASC and Kris Schrader, ASC in May.
