Artist Kevin Kelly will exhibit “Long Walk Club” at Steckline Gallery during a First Friday reception, which will take place from 5-8 p.m. on March 5.
Kelly grew up in both Colorado and Kansas. He received his Bachelor of Art and his Master of Fine Arts from Wichita State University. He has been teaching art at Wichita West High School since 2001.
Kelly has been featured in both group and solo exhibits in Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and New York for the last 15 years. His work has been featured in several publications, including New American Paintings, Studio Visit magazine and the book Wichita Artists in Their Studios.
In his artist statement, Kelly said, “I like to say that I am not so much using paint as I am using the vocabulary of painting as I dissect its processes, removing the paint from the canvas in large skins. By taking the painted gestures and the subjects out of their normal contexts, I hope to give both a fighting chance in this conflict.”
There will be an Art for Lunch presentation from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, March 4, in the gallery. This event is free and reservations are not required. Masks and physical distancing are required.
The Steckline Gallery is located inside the De Mattias Fine Arts Center on the Newman campus, 3100 McCormick. The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., or by appointment.
Kelly’s exhibit will be on display from March 5-26. For more information, email Director of Steckline Gallery Shannon Johnston at johnstons@newmanu.edu.
