Men’s Basketball
Keaton Schultz scored 24 points, and Newman put together its highest offensive output of the season, but it wasn’t enough to stop Incarnate Word as the Jets fell 108-93 to the Cardinals Saturday afternoon inside the McDermott Center in San Antonio, Texas. Newman rebounded with a 68-60 win two days later on the other side of San Antonio against St. Mary’s. Jaray Mathews’ 15 points led the Jets in their ninth win of the season. He was one of four Jets to post double figures in the contest.
Newman is now 9-4 on the season, and 3-1 in Heartland Conference play. They will return to action Saturday when they host the Lincoln Blue Tigers in a 4:30 p.m. contest inside Fugate Gymnasium.
Women’s Basketball
Melissa Brockleman tied her career high of 15 points, but 28 turnovers cost the Newman women’s basketball team in an 81-42 loss to Incarnate Word Saturday afternoon at the McDermott Center in San Antonio, Texas. Two days later, the Jets lost a defensive battle, falling 49-37 to the St. Mary’s Rattlers. The Jets shot just 5.9 percent from the field in the first half, but rallied to within two points halfway through the second half before St. Mary’s put together a late run for the 12-point win.
The loss drops Newman to 3-11 this year, and 1-3 in Heartland Conference play. The Jets will return to action Saturday in a 2 p.m. contest against Lincoln.
