Lecture will address communication influences on theology
Wichita, Kan. – The Newman University School of Arts and Humanities invites the public to attend a presentation later this month by noted professor and author, Paul A. Soukup, S.J. Father Soukup’s lecture, “Communication and Theology,” will focus on the impact communication strategies have had on theology.
The presentation is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m. in the Dugan-Gorges Conference Center of the Dugan Library and Campus Center on the Newman University campus at 3100 McCormick in Wichita. Following his presentation, Fr. Soukup will meet with Newman honor students for a dessert reception in the Sister Tarcisia Roths Alumni Lounge.
Fr. Soukup is a Professor of Communication and Chair of the Communication Department at Santa Clara University in California. He’s an accomplished author and scholar, earning his doctorate in Communication from the University of Texas at Austin. In addition, he earned two degrees in Theology from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley: a Masters of Divinity (1978) and a Masters of Sacred Theology (1980). He also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from Saint Louis University (1973). He currently serves as a consultant to the American Bible Society Research Center for Scripture and Media.
“Communication techniques and practices have influenced how we do theology by influencing how we think about spreading The Gospel,” said Fr. Soukup.
Fr. Soukup has authored or co-authored several books and articles. He is the author of Out of Eden, a book which reflects on how God restores people’s blocked communication and thus enables them to lead lives with deeper connection and meaning. Media, Culture, and Catholicism (1996) is also among his many published works.
