More than 30 employers with part-time and full-time work and internship opportunities will be present at the upcoming Newman University Career Fair from 2 to 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24, in the Dugan-Gorges Conference Center.
Attire is business casual. All students who register in Handshake can enter their names into a drawing for a prize once they arrive at the event.
Stand out from the crowd
Thanks to Career Services at Newman, finding the perfect internship or cooperative education opportunity doesn’t have to be complicated.
“This fair is for all majors at Newman and is a great way to meet and chat with employers from various industries who are eager to hire interns, co-op students and full-time employees,” Sarah Rupp, director of Career Services, explained. “Employers are eager to hire Newman students and having them on campus lets them see the amazing talent we have housed here.”
Rupp shared that the act of networking with employers allows the company representatives to “see the student outside of a resume.” In some cases, it can even lead to “instant interviews,” Rupp said.
Register in Handshake
To get the most out of the Career Fair, Rupp advises: “Have a plan in place.”
All students must register for the event in Handshake using their Newman email and password to get started.
Registering gives each student a first glance at the employers who will be in attendance, what they are currently looking for and positions available at the various organizations. Students can also view any upcoming workshops that are available on campus.

“Figure out who you want to speak with, but do be sure to speak to everyone,” Rupp said. “You may be surprised by what some employers have to offer you. Practice your elevator pitch. Showcase what makes you unique.”
Most important, Rupp said, is for students to have fun.
“Be yourself and use this as a learning experience — you’ll be able to find out more information about employers and industries through face-to-face interactions more than on the employers’ websites,” she said.
