Newman University Director of Choral Music Deanne Zogleman has been hired as guest conductor for the Heart of America Men’s Chorus. Zogleman will serve as the choir’s interim director through December 2011, while the chorus searches for a permanent director.
“I’m excited to work with these talented men,” Zogleman said. “These guys are so much fun, and I’m honored to be chosen. It’s a great group that has a heart of gold – they always give back to the community – a large portion of the money they take in goes to a charity.”
The Heart of America Men’s Chorus is a Wichita choir founded in 2002, with the goals of performing for the joy of singing and of being involved in the community. The chorus currently includes approximately 40 singers. In the past, Men’s Chorus concert proceeds have benefited groups such as the Alzheimer’s Association of the Great Plains, the Dr. Donna Sweet Emergency Fund, Positive Directions, GraceMed, the Wichita Community Children’s Choir, the Ryan White Foundation, the Kansas Foodbank Warehouse, the Wichita Children’s Home, and the Greensburg, Kan., school district’s fine arts department.
Zogleman, who is the first female conductor to be hired by the Heart of America Men’s Chorus, replaces founding Artistic Director and Conductor Howard Webb, who will retire at the end of the group’s ninth season in July 2011.
The chorus will stage a concert at Newman University on Saturday, Dec. 3 and Sunday, Dec. 4, 2011, and will be joined by the Newman Chorale Men. The concert will take place in Performance Hall, inside the De Mattias Fine Arts Center on the Newman campus. The Men’s Chorus typically holds concerts in December, March or April, and June or July.
