Men’s Basketball
The Jets opened their regular season with two wins earlier this week. Keaton Schultz’s career-high 16 points led Newman to a 73-60 win over Tabor Monday night, while Chip Steven’s best night as a Jet led Newman to a 77-50 win over Bethany on Wednesday. The Jets are now 2-0 on the season, and will host defending Lone Star Conference champion Midwestern State in Saturday’s homecoming game. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium.
Women’s Basketball
Newman dropped its first two games of the 2009-10 season. Freshman Melanie Brockleman posted 18 points and 11 rebounds against Rockhurst in her first regular season contest as a Jet, but Newman came up on the short end of a 59-42 decision Sunday night in Kansas City. Two days later, Rainey Nickel broke a scoreless slump, and dumped 20 points on Cameron. Junior Monique Pitts added 12 points, but it was the visiting Aggies who left Fugate Gymnasium with the 70-51 victory. Newman will look for its first win this weekend when they travel to Denver, Colo., for the Catholic Schools Tournament, hosted by Regis University. Newman will meet the host Regis Rangers Friday evening, and will face either Rockhurst or the College of Saint Mary on Saturday.
Wrestling
The Jets were in action last weekend at the Central Missouri Open. Mitch Arnold provided some excitement for the Jets in the 149 lb. class. After picking up a win over McKendree University’s Kody Presswood in his opening match, Arnold knocked off Central Missouri’s William Forrest (D: 16-10), who entered the weekend ranked fifth in the latest NCAA Div. 2 poll. Arnold went 1-2 in his remaining matches to finish with a 3-2 record in the event. Newman will be back in action Saturday at the UNO Open hosted by the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
Men’s Soccer
Joe Gerant earned Second Team Academic All-Region by the College Sports Information Directors of America. The senior led Newman in goals scored this season, and has earned a 3.824 GPA in his time at Newman. Gerant was also named to the Daktronics All South Central Region team as a forward.
Women’s Soccer
Amanda Knabe and Heather Baloga each earned Daktronics All South Central Region honors. Knabe was named to the All South Central Region First Team at the midfielder position, while Baloga earned Second Team honors as a defender. Knabe is now eligible for Daktronics All-America consideration.
Volleyball
Chelsey Potter was the only member of the Newman volleyball team to be named to the All-Heartland Conference team, which was released last week. Potter led the Jets with 291 kills this season behind a team-high .200 hitting percentage. Potter also finished second on the team with 366 digs. Senior Angie Bennett was named Second Team Academic All-District by the College Sports Information Directors of America after finishing second on the team in kills, and posting a 3.912 GPA in the classroom.
