Sophomore goal keeper Christina Farid recorded nine saves and posted back-to-back shutouts last weekend in Texas. Karina Ortiz scored her first goal of the season in the final minute of the second overtime period against #7 St. Edward’s Friday night in Austin, while Amanda Knabe’s golden goal in the 87th minute led the Jets to a 1-0 win over St. Mary’s Sunday afternoon in San Antonio.

Picked sixth in the Heartland Conference Pre-Season poll, the Jets are now 8-5-4 on the season, and are in sole possession of third place in the conference with a 6-2-2 record. The Jets will host their final two games of the season starting Friday with a 4 p.m. match against fourth-placed Dallas Baptist.

Senior back-up goal keeper Stephen Williams also posted back-to-back shutouts last weekend, helping lead the Jets men’s soccer team to a 1-0 win over St. Mary’s Friday night, and a 0-0 tie against third-placed Texas A&M International Sunday afternoon at Wilkins Field. Renato Ramlochan scored his first goal of the season in Friday’s 1-0 win over St. Mary’s.

A pre-season pick to finish sixth in the Heartland Conference, the Jets are now fifth, and are just one game out of fourth place with three matches remaining, all of which will be played on the road starting with a 3 p.m. contest against St. Edward’s Friday afternoon in Austin, Texas. Newman will conclude its season with a visit to Incarnate Word on Sunday, before trekking to Odessa, Texas to face Texas-Permian Basin on Nov. 8.

A second-place finish by sophomore Chris Taylor helped lead Newman to a second-place team finish at the Heartland Conference Cross Country Championships, held Saturday on the campus of Dallas Baptist University in Dallas, Texas. Taylor completed the 8K course in a career-best time of 26:29. Austin Hunt and Nick Abbott earned all-Heartland Conference honors in the race by finishing in the top 10. Hunt ran the course in 26:36 and finished fourth, while Abbott’s time of 27:14 gave him an eighth-place finish in the event.
