For Allena Kates, transferring to Newman University’s nursing program was more than just a change in schools — it was a life-changing decision that set her on a path to becoming a compassionate health care professional.

Kates, who graduated from Newman in May 2025 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, took a nontraditional route to the program. As a transfer student, she faced unique challenges but ultimately found a place she calls “very close to home.”

Navigating the transfer process

To help move throughout the transfer process, Kates worked with nursing faculty and staff.

“Communication was key in navigating the requirements and making sure everything was in order,” she said, adding that the personalized guidance helped ensure she would meet graduate requirements.

Embracing academic and personal growth

Once Kates settled into the nursing program, she embraced the coursework and the opportunities for personal growth. She described the program as “both academically and mentally challenging,” but credits it with making her stronger and more resilient.

“Studying harder than ever before and seeing those efforts pay off was incredibly rewarding,” Kates said. “Understanding complex material and applying it in clinical practice showed me how much I’ve grown as a student and as a future nurse.”

Expanding cultural awareness

During her time at Newman, Kates gained a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity in health care. Through her research on pediatric nutrition, she learned the importance of respecting diverse cultural backgrounds while promoting healthy lifestyles.

“There are so many different cultures and ways of life,” Kates said. “Respecting those differences while trying to incorporate healthy habits for children is crucial.”

This cultural awareness has become an essential part of Kates’ approach to nursing, preparing her to provide more holistic and culturally sensitive care to her future patients.

“I want to be a nurse who not only cares for patients but also advocates for their well-being,” she said.

Looking forward

As a graduate, Kates reflects on her journey with a sense of accomplishment and gratitude. She considers her experiences at Newman — both the challenges and the triumphs — as vital for growing as a health care professional.

Earning and wearing a graduation stole for commencement was one of the highlights of her time at Newman since it symbolized her hard work and involvement.

“The stole represents overcoming hardships and being seen as a committed student in the nursing program,” Kates said. “It’s a testament to my perseverance and dedication.”

A bright future in nursing

Kates said her time at Newman has helped her emerge as a confident and capable nurse, ready to make a difference in the lives of her patients.

As she steps into her new role as a nursing professional, Kates carries with her the knowledge, skills and values she gained at Newman University. Her journey is a powerful reminder of the transformative power of education and the support of a nurturing academic community.

“Even one student can achieve their goals with hard work,” Kates said. “My experience at Newman has equipped me not just with professional skills, but with a broader perspective on health care and a strong foundation for my career.”
