About the show

Based on the novel by bestselling authors Jodi Picot and Samantha Van Leer, “Between the Lines” is an enchanting musical that follows the story of Delilah, an outsider who seeks to find her place in the world.

When Delilah moves to a new town and school, she seeks comfort in the pages of her favorite book, where she feels heard and understood by the handsome Prince Oliver. But as the lines between fantasy and reality begin to blur, Delilah discovers how to find her place in the real world while keeping her dreams alive.

The show is directed by Director of Music Deanne Zogleman with costumes designed by Newman instructor Christy Railsback.

Dannicka McGrath, a junior theater major with a concentration in technical production, originally talked to Zogleman about stage-managing the musical, but instead was encouraged to audition. She plays three characters in “Between the Lines”: Jules (a goth), Kyrie (a mermaid/siren) and a fairy.

“’Between the Lines’” is an amazing production,” McGrath said. “It’s fun and relevant and reflects the hopes many of us had as kids to live a fairytale and understand why reality is sometimes better.”

Fellow actor Daniel Cubias plays Ryan, a stereotypical high school jock, and Frump, a tap-dancing dog in love with a princess.

Cubias, a biology major with a pre-medicine concentration, has acted in three musicals, five plays, three spring shows and approximately 30 Sloppy Joe Improv shows as a Newman student.

“It’s fun,” Cubias said. “If I’m having fun on stage, then I think people will have fun in the audience. Also, come watch me act like a dog, I took a lot of inspiration from the two crusty-eye white dogs in my life, Chabelito and Muffin.”
