Newman University will host an event to launch Professor of English Bryan D. Dietrich’s latest book The Assumption from 7 to 10 p.m., Friday, Nov. 11 in the Jabara Flexible Theatre, located inside the De Mattias Fine Arts Center on the Newman campus. The event is free and open to the public.
The event will feature the author reading from and signing copies of the new book. Copies will be available for purchase from Eighth Day Books.
The Assumption is the sixth book of poems to be published by Dietrich. As in works such as The X-Files or 2001: A Space Odyssey, Dietrich’s The Assumption explores the question “Are we alone in the universe?” In the poems the author draws from today’s popular science fiction mythologies and much older theological narratives, and presents a variety of perspectives and personas.
Dietrich often writes in the science-fiction/horror genre, and has published poems in The New Yorker, The Nation, Poetry, The Paris Review and many other publications. He has won several prizes and awards, is a five-time finalist for the Yale Younger Poets Series, and has been nominated multiple times for both the Pushcart and the Pulitzer.
