Steckline Gallery will present “To Dust” by Anthony Corraro during a First Friday exhibition from 5-7 p.m. March 7, at Newman University.
“To Dust” will be on display March 6-28. An Art for Lunch, which includes a discussion with the artist and pizza lunch for Newman students, will take place March 6 from noon-1 p.m. All events are free and open to the public.
“To Dust” is a print exhibition that explores how the simple act of cleaning can be restorative and comforting. Using dust collected from sweeping his home and studio space, Corraro showcases dust as both inevitable and “beautifully fragile.”
“Through an extensive process of dyeing and refinement, I transform the discarded remnants of cleaning into ornate works of art using screen printing techniques,” he said. “Buddhist mandalas inspire the designs, which create a meditative state through calculated symmetry and geometry.”
Nothing is used to adhere the dust to the surface of each print, which encourages an intimate experience between the art and its viewers. Corraro highlights the connection between “how we alter both our environments and our perception of them.”
“This reverses the typical relationship we have with dust,” Corraro explained. “When presented in this way, the originally restorative act of sweeping it away becomes destructive. The normally repulsive substance of dust becomes valuable.”
Corraro earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Oklahoma State University. He is currently pursuing a graduate degree from Wichita State University.
