Teagan Scherer receives full-tuition St. Newman Scholarship

Teagan Scherer, a 2025 graduate from Bishop Carroll Catholic High School in Wichita, was in complete disbelief when she was awarded the prestigious St. Newman Scholarship from Newman University.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Scherer said. “I was really happy and so relieved.”

The first thing Scherer did was find her dad to share the good news with him. Both were elated.

“It’s just my dad and me,” Schrerer said. “Without the scholarship, college might not even be a possibility without going into crippling debt.”

Tragedy reveals purpose

Scherer wanted to go to Newman because its graduates have a high success rate of getting into medical school.

Specifically, Scherer wants to be a coroner. Her reason is personal.

After unexpectedly losing her mother in December 2024, Scherer and her father were at a loss. The coroner’s report provided answers to the tragedy they had endured.

“For days, my father and I were in complete shock,” Scherer said. “It wasn’t until we got the autopsy report and cause of death that we could truly begin to calm down and properly grieve.”

Seeing the report solidified the career plan Scherer was already leaning toward.

“The moment we received the autopsy report was monumental in my decision for what I wanted to do with my life because it only confirmed the way I had been feeling about my future,” Scherer said.

Scherer has always been interested in biology and human anatomy, in particular.

“I had an idea that I wanted to go into a field that incorporated anatomy in a way that contributes profoundly to the community,” Scherer said. “Now, without any doubt in my mind, I want to help those who have been affected by a tragic loss in the same way that I was.”
