Representatives from Newman University of Wichita met with Independence Community College (ICC) administrators earlier this month to sign a dual admissions program agreement between the institutions for students seeking their degrees in Elementary Education.
Dr. Daniel Barwick, ICC President, hosted the event in the ICC Library. Special guests from Newman University were: Dr. Michael Austin, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs; Dr. Connie Watson, Education Faculty in the School of Education; and Randy Ware, Admissions Counselor in Enrollment Management.
“This partnership is an exciting opportunity for our students and a win for both institutions,” said Dr. Barwick. “When an ICC student enters the NU Elementary Education program they can transfer up to 74 community college credits and specific ICC classes are equivalent to NU courses. Ease of transfer and acceptance of ICC credits in a quality program is always what we want for our transfer students.”
According to the agreement, once the general education requirements are completed at ICC, it only takes 16 months to complete the Teacher Education Program (TEP) through Newman. All courses in the program are offered at night, three to four evenings each week in Independence. The teaching internship semester is part of the 16-month program.
Dr. Watson, who serves as Newman’s TEP liaison on the ICC campus, noted that program completers can be licensed to teach kindergarten through 6th grade and may complete middle level endorsements in math, science, English or social studies. Degrees available are Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education; Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Unified Education; ESL Endorsement; Middle Level Endorsement; and Masters of Science in Education.

Spring semester classes begin Jan. 10 at ICC and Jan. 17 at Newman. For information about ICC classes visit www.indycc.edu, for Newman classes visit www.newmanu.edu.
